Heritage Interpretation

Latin America and the Caribbean

I-PAL 2025: Building Skills, Enriching Experiences

Updated: Jan 17

As the Executive Director of I-PAL, I firmly believe that our mission to interpret heritage has a transformative purpose: to connect people with the depth of their history, the richness of their culture, and the beauty of nature, creating an impact that strengthens communities, fosters respect for our environment, and enriches the sense of belonging and shared purpose.

This vision, although deeply rooted in timeless values, requires adaptation to the dynamics of our time.

In a constantly changing world, where public expectations evolve and technological tools advance rapidly, our ability to remain relevant depends on a fundamental commitment: continuous training to achieve and maintain the highest standards.

Why Continuous Training Matters

Heritage interpretation is not static. Each year, new discoveries and technologies emerge, challenging us to adapt and improve. But it’s not just about keeping up. At I-PAL, we believe that continuous training is the cornerstone of providing meaningful experiences that inspire, educate, and endure.

Training not only enhances our skills but also strengthens our ability to innovate, build authentic connections, and stay at the forefront of heritage interpretation, especially in a region as rich and diverse as Latin America and the Caribbean.

Here, our traditions, languages, and landscapes are as varied as our stories. This regional focus is crucial, as heritage interpretation must be as vibrant and unique as the culture it represents.

How Will We Achieve This?

This year, we will focus on three key areas:

  1. Knowledge Updates. We will organise workshops and seminars with international and regional experts, designed to connect global best practices with the local realities of Latin America and the Caribbean. These learning spaces will not only enable us to incorporate innovative perspectives but also promote and utilise specialised literature in the most relevant languages of our region, such as Spanish, Portuguese, and French, thereby strengthening our understanding and application of diverse approaches.

  2. Global Standards and Certifications. We are committed to aligning with the most rigorous international standards while tailoring them to reflect the specific characteristics and aspirations of Latin America and the Caribbean. We will also partner with regional networks and organisations to develop models that address local needs and opportunities.

  3. Technology and Innovative Tools. Technology is redefining how heritage is interpreted. From interactive apps to AI, our training will include digital tools that highlight the unique character of Latin American and Caribbean heritage, expanding its reach and accessibility.

AI can personalise experiences, analyse data to better understand our audiences, and create new ways of interacting with our cultural and natural legacy.

The Role of All of Us

This commitment to training is not just an organisational initiative but a collective responsibility. Every member of I-PAL, from interpreters to coordinators, will play a vital role in this process. By investing in our development, we ensure that every experience we offer is infused with quality, passion, and relevance, representing the rich cultural tapestry of Latin America and the Caribbean.

From inclusive narratives that celebrate and reflect the region’s rich cultural diversity to sustainable strategies tailored to the specific needs of our communities, we will explore every tool and resource to enhance our practice and contribute to a positive impact on the heritage we share.

A Long-term Vision

Our dedication to training is not a short-term strategy; it is a guiding principle for years to come. We want I-PAL to be a beacon of excellence in heritage interpretation, not only globally but also as a benchmark for Latin America and the Caribbean. This region has immense potential and unparalleled heritage, and we aim to be part of the transformation that celebrates and preserves it.

I invite you to join us on this journey. This year, we will transform not just as professionals but as a community committed to a greater purpose: connecting people with heritage in ways that have a meaningful impact, particularly in our region.

Let us move forward together, learning, growing, and transforming.

With commitment and enthusiasm,

Didier Bergame

I-PAL Executive Director
